Abstract

This paper reviews the role of language in addressing issues of instruction anddiversity towards the achievement of the aims of basic education in Botswana. Italso examines the role of indigenous languages in instruction in promoting andsustaining national educational goals as well as the development of a functionalcitizen. It further reviews the Botswana language in education policy and itsimplementation. The failures, inconsistencies between policy and practice, and realobstacles are discussed. The need for compromise in the implementation of mothertongue instruction and its implications for literacy are discussed.
