Exploring residents' tourism support behaviors: A framework of the psychological perspective of the human-place relationship

Abstract

Based on cognitive-affective personality system theory and social exchange theory, this study establishes a psychological model of the human-place relationship that reflects the process by which residents' tourism support for tourist destinations is formed and examines the mediating role of residents' tolerance and the chain-mediated effect of residents' perceived tourism impact and tolerance. To test the hypothetical model, a survey of 405 residents of Quanzhou Ancient City, China, was conducted. The results confirm the relationships among psychological empowerment, place attachment, perceived tourism impact and tolerance on residents' tourism support behaviors. The findings contribute to residents' tourism support behaviors education and guidance.
