Abstract

Stress is an important parameter governing the magnetic properties of steel. This is normally a complicating factor for magnetic non-destructive inspection techniques but it may also be exploited for inspection of high performance steel structures such as gas pipelines. Magnetometer measurements of magnetization changes induced by bending stress above gas transmission lines are presented. These can be interpreted using recent advances in the theory of the magnetomechanical effect by separating them into reversible and irreversible components and may eventually be used as a basis for bending stress monitoring. © 1986.
