Abstract
This article analyses the reaction of palm tree growers following the privatisation, in Côte d'Ivoire, of the state-run "Palmindustrie", in 1997. The authors review the major effects of privatisation in studying changes occurring in the production and marketing strategies of smallholders. They also emphasize the increasing role played by small-scale extraction of palm oil and describe the technical changes occurring in the extraction process.
