Polyuria and Polydipsia

Abstract

Polyuria and polydipsia (PU/PD) are common clinical signs caused by a variety of disorders. An initial series of diagnostic tests, including a thorough history, physical examination, complete blood count (CBC), serum chemistry, urinalysis with culture and sensitivity, total T4, and abdominal imaging can identify many, but not all, causes of PU/PD. Obtaining a diagnosis of the underlying disorder is essential for the initiation of appropriate therapy. The prognosis for cats with PU/PD is dependent on the diagnosis of the underlying disorder.
