Research funding in the twenty-first century

Of: Greenberg DS. Science for sale: the perils, rewards and delusions of campus capitalism. Univ Chig Press, 2007. Greenberg is "the premier journalist of science policy". He feels [as I do] that science should be driven purely by curiosity. Reviewer reckons, though, that he has overlooked that science always has gone for the payback, and his view is oversimplified. However, Greenberg reckons the reviewer has got things wrong (Greenberg DS. Heavy workload may have led to mistakes in review. ib. 781). He does not say that academic and university are best motivated by curiosity alone; he gives a scientist's quote, but disagrees. Nor does he disparage practical research.
