Abstract

Objective: To assess the feasibility and efficacy of laparoscopic appendicectomy. Methods: Fifty one patients with clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis underwent laparoscopic appendicectomy between December 1995 and August 1996. Results: Laparoscopic appendicectomy was successful in 46 patients. Five cases (9.8%) had to be converted to open appendicectomy. There were no intraoperative or postoperative complications. The mean operative time was 40 minutes and the mean postoperative hospital stay was two days. Conclusion: Laparoscopic appendicectomy is a reasonable alternative to routine surgery and can be performed safely with minimal complications and reduced hospital stay.
