Abstract

Eutamias minimus and S. lateralis are sympatric in my study area. My research (Carey and Johnson, unpublished data) shows a significant overlap in the diets of the two species (two of the three most abundant plant species and the most abundant arthropod family are shared). The lower population density of chipmunks in the area suggests competition between the two species, manifested by aggression, may be resulting in a temporal separation of their realized niches with a difference in access to food or in the exclusion of the chipmunk from a portion of the potentially suitable den sites.
