Abstract
A classification of the main types of fractures around the elbow joint of a child and a brief description of the causes and management of the principal early complications are given. Unlike almost every other fracture in a child, a fracture around the elbow joint may lead to joint stiffness, serious permanent disability or complications arising in adult life. The diagnosis must be precise and should be controlled by X-rays of the opposite limb for suspected fracture of the lower end of the humerus and by X-rays in varying degree of rotation of the forearm for suspected fracture of the upper end of the radius. Treatment must be carried out promptly with all available in-patient facilities. Decision to carry out open operation should be made on the initial study of the fracture and not forced by a series of failed manipulations.
