Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of student gender and educational level on basic psychological needs in the area of Physical Education during compulsory schooling. The sample comprised 684 students (323 boys and 361 girls) aged 11 to 18. The Adaptation to physical education of basic psychological needs in exercise scale was administered. The results show that, as students progressed to higher educational levels, they perceived lower levels of autonomy and competence, and fewer possibilities to engage in personal relationships. With regard to gender differences, boys perceived more autonomy and competence than girls.
