This paper reviews international practice in mathematics education for post-compulsory students. It identifies the unique nature of British practices with respect to both academic and vocational track students. It then draws on the general literature on economic change and labour productivity to evaluate the current British approach, and concludes that this is unlikely to produce the standards of mathematics attainment required by current economic change. © 1997 Oxford University Press.
