Abstract

Deepfakes allow the fabrication of very believable but fake audio, video, and visual materials, which can be used to misrepresent political actors, influence the public opinion and change the electoral discourse. This paper investigates the effects of deepfake technology on elections in relation to voter perception, political communication, and institutional credibility. The study reveals that the use of deepfakes in fabricated news leads to increased political polarization and decreased public trust in democratic systems. It also examines various deepfake detection methods, legal regulations, and policy measures that can lower the risk of deepfake-related scandals in elections. By looking at the recent electoral scenarios and policy reactions, the article identifies the shortcomings of governance, public awareness, and technological preparedness. Those revelations indicate that on the one hand, deepfake technologies can jeopardize the democratic trust, on the other hand, the risks of deepfakes could be limited by the deployment of stringent regulations, technological countermeasures, media literacy programs, and the establishment of ethical principles for AI. The article ends up with the view that the challenge of maintaining electoral integrity in the era of synthetic media calls for a concerted effort among the government, technology industry and society at ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌large.
