Digital Support for Scholarly Writing: Tools That Do Not Break the Budget

Abstract

Emerging technologies, including productivity tools, collaborative tools, social media, and artificial intelligence, are now having a greater impact on scholars' intellectual contributions and careers than ever before. Given the abundance of technologies, the ubiquity of digital writing, and the rise in online and hybrid doctoral programs that accommodate early childhood practitioners, early-career scholars should be proficient in using emerging technologies for academic purposes. However, research indicates variability in the use of emerging technologies by doctoral students and early-career professors for specific academic writing purposes. This paper serves as a paper mentor by describing how digital technologies are transforming academic writing, dissemination, and preservation of research. Next, it identifies the challenges that hinder novice writers’ attainment of academic writing goals and the factors influencing writers' adoption of digital technology for academic writing. It describes how early-career writers with limited access to mentors can make ethical and responsible use of the free and inexpensive technologies presented in this article to make writing more manageable at each stage of the writing process.
