Abstract

The characteristics of a new apparatus that combines pulsed laser excitation in molecular beam with surface-science method were studied. It was used for detection of absorbates to enable state-selected studies of gas-surface reaction dynamics. The feasibility of the method was demonstrated by state-specific measurements of reactivity of CH4 excited to the first overtone of the antisymmetric C-H stretch on Ni(100) as a function of incident translational energy.
