The impact of social media on the preservation of cultural identity among Afghan youth

Abstract

In the age of technological advancement and globalization, preserving cultural identity is a significant matter, particularly in regions such as Afghanistan, where rich cultural heritage faces new threats. This study investigates the complex interaction between social media and the preservation of Afghan cultural identity, using Social Identity Theory as a theoretical framework. A quantitative research design was employed, utilizing structured questionnaires administered to students at Kandahar University, providing insights into their opinions, attitudes, and experiences with cultural preservation and social media usage. The Cochran formula was utilized, resulting in a required sample of approximately 385 participants. The findings show the importance of social media platforms in supporting the expression and celebration of Afghan cultural identities, with Facebook appearing as the most popular medium. Despite social media’s positive impact, there have been concerns about the effects of globalization and Westernization on Afghan culture. Figure 3 shows that 31% regard globalization’s influence as moderate, admitting its significance yet emphasizing the durability of Afghan cultural identity. Participants reported coping strategies such as engaging in cultural events and leveraging social media to promote traditional practices. According to Figure 7, 71% of participants identified participation in cultural events as a key method for maintaining ties to Afghan traditions and values. Furthermore, recommendations for government engagement were made, emphasizing the need for financial assistance, policy enforcement, and educational programs. This study underscores the evolving landscape of cultural preservation in Afghanistan and calls for interdisciplinary strategies to safeguard Afghan heritage in an increasingly interconnected world.
