Abstract

The current knowledge about the dangers of heat stress in the workplace is limited, especially in the agricultural sector. This phenomenon is related to global warming and its effects on thermal stress, hydration status, and physical work capacity among workers. The aim of this reviewwasto compileavailable evidence on the effects of global warming and heat stress on health, hydration status, and work capacity in the agricultural sector. A systematic reviewwas conducted using the PubMed/MEDLINE and ScienceDirect databases. The search was filtered by the term “systematic review” and restricted to articles published in both English and Spanish between 2012 and July 2024. A total of 541 references were retrieved, of which 13 articles were selected for in-depth analysis. The selected articles were published between 2016 and July 2024, with most published after 2018. Most studies addressed illnesses and injuries associated with heat stress in the workplace. Six studies addressed risk factors and heat exposure in outdoor workers, as well as heat stress metrics. Four articles mentioned cooling or heat mitigation measures and their relationship to fatigue. It is concluded that global warming will increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, posing a growing challenge to occupational ergonomics. Workers exposed to extreme heat, especially in developing countries and tropical regions, are at greater risk of fatigue. This includes workers in agriculture, construction, firefighters, miners, soldiers, and manufacturing.
