Variability and interactions of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton in Varano lagoon (Adriatic Sea)

Abstract

Bacterial abundance was investigated in Varano lagoon for a 12 month period. The concentrations were found to be quite high (1.8 ± 2.2 × 109 cells l-1) as well as being coupled to phytoplankton biomass and phosphorus content. However, an inverse relationship with nitrogen was detected.
