Abstract

Bauhaus. Orthodox cult of neo-modernists and stubborn refusal from eclectic populists at the same time. In fact, most people know very little about the Bauhaus and even our professional attitude as architects towards its activity seems to be based on quite unsatisfactory knowledge. Any operative historical reception should be aware of the necessity of an equilibrium of change and continuity in order to avoid being obsolete or obscure. We have to develop our knowledge constantly, and at the same time revise our clichés. The Bauhaus cannot be identified any more with the professional oeuvres of some of its leading masters. We should recognise its great contribution to the general improvement of human habitat, while being able to distinguish between its real achievements and the failures of some of its experiments.
