Abstract

A study was conducted by several companies from the coating industry to find out the results of curtain coating applied for refinement of paper surfaces. The study was conducted at LSTM-Erlangen, Germany and supported by the Bayerische Forschungssstifung, Stiftung Industrieforschung, and a consortium of companies from the industry. The objective of the study was to extend the numerical calculation procedure developed at LSTM-Erlangen for curtain coating applications. The procedure involved considering the fluid properties of curtain coating for designing curtain coating equipment. All the components of curtain coating were considered, while conducting the study. It significantly focused on the film formation and the interaction of the supplied film, with the substrate to be coated. The study consisted mainly numerical calculations and the results were verified by experiments.
