From the discourse of domesticity to the feminism of coresponsibility: the contribution of Carmen de Burgos

Abstract

Some of the pioneers of feminism remained anchored to what has been called the discourse of domesticity, because, despite their demands for equal education for women, they continued to defend women's belonging to the domestic sphere. Gradually, the feminist movement evolved and later hinged on the demand for women's suffrage and civil and labour rights until the first feminist wave or feminism of equality took shape. The evolution of the various feminisms since then is well known. This process can be seen in the work of one of the first Spanish feminists of the early 20th century, Carmen de Burgos. This paper focuses on the analysis of the journey of this author's thought in her transit through different gender discourses that evolved from that initial position centred on domesticity to a feminist thought that already shares features with the so-called feminism of co-responsibility.
