Abstract
The original stimulus to the development of titanium came from the aerospace industry where use was made of its high strength and its low density. The high strength-to-weight ratio of titanium is especially valuable in the gas turbine engine with its need for light weight, creep resistant materials. This remains the single most important market and new alloys have been developed with improved properties to meet the growing demands of the engine designer. There has also been considerable development of the chemical and general engineering markets where the most important properties are the outstanding corrosion resistance of titanium and its useful electro-chemical behavior. Outlets for the material have been found in such areas as the chemical and metal finishing industries, power generation, metal refining, oil production, desalination, and in surgery.
