Abstract

We report the case of a youngster who has not learned to name correctly all of the letters of the alphabet, but who nonetheless can do cross-case matching (Posner’s name-matching task) of all the letters, entirely without error. This result suggests that the development of cross-case matching abilities in normal subjects may also proceed without reference to a letter identification process based upon a phonological code. © 1987, The Psychonomic Society, Inc..
