Abstract

OBJECTIVE : To evaluate the effectiveness of the Low Vision in Benjamin Constant Institute ( IBC ) and demonstrate actual need for an Institute in the mold of Benjamin Constant Institute in current inclusion policy . METHODS : An ecological study was conducted from 1st October 1990 to 20 December 2002 , analyzing three periods of service in the Low Vision Institute in Benjamin Constant : a ) 1991 - beginning of service , b ) 1995 - integration of medical and pedagogical c ) 2002 - current . In this analysis , the following indicators were studied : I - number of visits in the Low Vision II - conditions of the Low Vision Institute in Benjamin Constant and III - associated . RESULTS : We observed an increase in assistance , which became wider after the integration of medical and pedagogical . Other indicators , such as the training of medical professionals , participation in training courses at the Instituto Benjamin Constant , increasing the number of agreements and referrals to the Benjamin Constant Institute and Rehabilitation , also confirm the effectiveness of the Low Vision Institute in Benjamin Constant. CONCLUSIONS: Low Vision sector proved to be the interface between the Medical and pedagogical service , becoming later on the Coordination of Rehabilitation and Physical Education . This resulted in change of posture from different sectors of the Benjamin Constant Institute in relation to patients with low vision , from the student to the patient community . Thus, the Benjamin Constant Institute showed its importance as regards inclusion policy . (AU )
