Abstract
This concept paper is a form of personal reflection from a pilot study conducted in the course “Moral Education Teaching Methods” (HMD3033) at Sultan Idris Education University. The lecturer-researcher introduced a technique called “interactive shadow puppetry” as an innovation in the teaching and learning of Moral Education. Students were given the freedom to realize the concept of interactive shadow puppetry as a technique in their microteaching sessions. They used this technique to teach a unit selected from the KSSR Moral Education Textbook for Form 1 to Form 5. The concept of interactive shadow puppetry is derived from the traditional form of shadow puppetry which is a form of performance art in our country. Traditional shadow puppetry, which is typically one-way in nature, was transformed into interactive shadow puppetry by providing the audience with the opportunity to become the Tok Dalang (shadow artist). Audience members who take on the role of Tok Dalang will manipulate the puppets while delivering dialogue behind the screen. Therefore, the discussion in this paper is divided into several sections, including the introduction to the concept of traditional shadow puppetry, the innovations made to transform it into an interactive version, and the steps involved in implementing interactive shadow puppetry. In addition, the potential of this technique in the teaching and learning of Moral Education, especially in instilling moral values, developing moral dimensions, creativity, and Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), is also discussed.
