Abstract

Three lipreading tests designed to assess recognition of syllables, words, and overlearned sentences were administered to 53 normal (17 male and 36 female) volunteers. As predicted, females were superior in lipreading ability, notably in recognizing sentences. We discuss the possibility that sex differences in gazing patterns explain the sex differences in lipreading ability. © 1988, The Psychonomic Soceity, Inc.. All rights reserved.
