El Tratado de Tordesillas

Abstract

A finales del siglo XV el mundo conocido por los europeos estaba en plena transformación. Las coronas de Castilla y Portugal competían por el dominio de nuevas rutas comerciales y territorios descubiertos más allá del Atlántico. En este contexto, el Tratado de Tordesillas, firmado el 7 de junio de 1494, fue el resultado de una serie de eventos históricos relacionados con la expansión marítima europea; representó un acuerdo fundamental que delimitó las zonas de exploración y conquista de ambos reinos con consecuencias que perdurarían por siglos. Sin embargo, la falta de precisión en la delimitación de la línea de demarcación y la intervención de otras potencias europeas llevaron a nuevos conflictos y negociaciones en las décadas siguientes. Dedicaremos fundamentalmente este artículo al análisis de los distintos tratados posteriores al Tratado de Tordesillas que intentaron solventar los enfrentamientos entre España y Portugal por la delimitación de fronteras en tierras americanas.At the end of the 15th century, the world known to Europeans was undergoing a transformation. The crowns of Castile and Portugal were competing for control of new trade routes and territories discovered beyond the Atlantic. In this context, the Treaty of Tordesillas, signed on June 7, 1494, was the result of a series of historical events related to European maritime expansion; it represented a fundamental agreement that delimited the areas of exploration and conquest of both kingdoms, with consequences that would last for centuries. However, the lack of precision in delimiting the demarcation line and the intervention of other European powers led to new conflicts and negotiations in the following decades. This article will focus mainly on the analysis of the various treaties that followed the Treaty of Tordesillas, which attempted to resolve the disputes between Spain and Portugal over the delimitation of borders in the America.
