Abstract

We offer novel hydrogen-bonded liquid crystalline complexes between 4-alkylthiobenzoic acids and 4-phenylpyridine. Although similar molecular systems connected with ester linkages or covalent bonds do not show any mesophases, the present complexes show nematic phase, indicating that hydrogen bonding has a significant role in mesogenic incidence.
