Abstract

In the originally published version of this manuscript, an error was noted under the "Genetics" heading. The first paragraph should read: "Approximately 5% to 10% of breast cancers are part of a hereditary cancer syndrome (22). Mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are the most common and well-recognized cause of inherited breast cancer risk. Among women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, the prevalence of the BRCA1 mutation is highest in those of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry at 8% to 10%, but overall is 2.5% in the white population. Similarly and lesser known, is that in women with diagnosed breast cancer, the prevalence of BRCA1 mutations in the African American population is 4.3%. Likewise, in women with diagnosed breast cancer, the prevalence of BRCA2 mutations in the African American population is 3%, which is higher than non-Ashkenazi Jewish white women (2%) (22).". This has now been corrected online.
