Topical Steroid Withdrawal Syndrome Caused by Short-term Steroid Use

Abstract

Topical and oral steroids are commonly prescribed to patients of all ages for inflammatory skin conditions. Cessation of long-term topical steroid use can result in topical steroid withdrawal syndrome (TSWS), also known as red skin syndrome, but TSWS can also occur after short-term, as-prescribed use. This report presents the case of a patient presenting with a chief complaint of rash who was misdiagnosed and prescribed ineffective treatments, including topical and oral steroids that exacerbated existing symptoms. Presenting symptoms of TSWS may be confused for other conditions; thus, prompt recognition and diagnosis is essential to prevent exacerbations and health complications.
