Scripture as Semiotic System: Theological Interpretation and the Multiple Senses of Scripture

Abstract

This paper argues for the appropriation of interpretation of the Scriptures according to the spritual sense as a helpful and acceptable way of engaging in constructive theology. Grounded to a degree in the work and thought of Thomas Aquinas, and drawing significantly on Paul Ricoeur's suggestions regarding figurative language and speculative discourse, the primary thesis of the paper is that when interpreting according to the spiritual sense, the content of Scripture itself functions as a semiotic system allowing the interpreter to press beyond the semantic capabilities of literal language in an attempt to speak meaningfully about God.
