Abstract

The technique of satellite altimetry is discussed. The complexity of the procedure for attaining highly accurate measurements of the sea level, and the need for a multidisciplinary approach are emphasized. Progress in oceanographic research is reviewed, with the emphasis on results from Skylab and the GEOS-3 missions, as well as from Seasat whose altimeter was the first one designed for oceanographic applications. The challanges that lie ahead, including improving the overall measurement accuracy of altimeter observations, and the development of new techniques for utilizing the altimeter data, are formulated. Future plans for the satellite altimeter systems, Topex/Poseidon and ERS-1.
