Perspective Chapter: The Norwegian Model of Correlation Rehabilitation – Bridging the Gap between Incarceration and Society

Abstract

This chapter delves into Norway’s correctional system, renowned for its progressive approach toward offender rehabilitation and reintegration. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the system’s key components, including humane treatment, educational and vocational training, restorative justice practices, and robust reintegration support. The findings indicate that these elements collectively contribute to Norway’s remarkably low recidivism rates and successful societal reintegration of former inmates. However, the chapter also acknowledges the challenges and limitations faced by the Norwegian justice system, including issues related to resource allocation, societal stigma, and the integration of foreign national prisoners. The study suggests potential solutions to these problems and offers recommendations for future improvements, making it a valuable resource for policymakers and practitioners in the field of criminal justice.
