Evidence-based practices in nursing

Abstract

The research base for nursing practice has increased dramatically in the last 40 years, and many nursing studies have shown the positive impacts of nursing on patient outcomes and the quality of care. Yet, there remains an unacceptable gap between the new knowledge and widespread adoption to improve care and health outcomes. This article discusses the current state of evidence-based practices (EBPs) in nursing, the resources available to implement EBP in clinical settings, research priorities, issues related to teaching EBPs to nursing students, and necessary organizational supports. Important questions for the immediate next steps for education and research are presented. © 2010 American Society on Aging.
