Abstract
The rate of suicide among Black youth is a significant public health issue. While there are several reasons that may help to explain the increased suicide among Black youth, scholars have noted that mental health conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety, trauma) are one of the most important risk factors. Yet, traditionally, Black youth are less likely to utilize mental health services for reasons such as cultural mistrust and lack of access to mental health care. In this chapter, we discuss the conceptualization of suicide among Black youth focusing on risk and protective factors. We also consider the role of context in increasing our understanding of the increased risk of suicidality among Black youth. Finally, we discuss the role of mental health services in preventing suicide among Black youth and provide recommendations for prevention.
