Abstract
To explore the possibility of a novel natural wood adhesive, we clarified that the basic characteris- tics of sucrose with added ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP). Sucrose and ADP mixed at vari- ous weight ratios were heated at 120-200℃ for a maximum of 20 min. Thermal analyses, insoluble mat- ter rate against boiling water, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were measured. The thermal properties of sucrose lowered significantly with the addition of a small amount of ADP. The insoluble matter rate increased with increasing heating temperature, irrespective of mixture ra- tio. However, the addition of a large quantity of ADP resulted in a low insoluble matter rate. The effec- tive heating time and ADP content at 180℃ were 10 min and 10wt%, respectively. The heated mixture contained a furan ring and carbonyl group, according to the results of FT-IR. It was clarified that su- crose changed to a high water-resistant substance by the addition of ADP and heating treatment.
