Abstract

This species has been reported to be extremely variable, especially in the form, size and colour of the flowers. However, examination of various clones, both in their natural habitats (in Australia and New Guinea) and in cultivation revealed that the shape of the labellum may be correlated with geographical origin. The 2 different labellum shapes, with no apparent intergradation of variation, are described. The northern populations in Australia and those in New Guinea are given subspecific status as D. discolor subsp. incurvata D. Liddle & P. Forster. This is distinguished from subsp. discolor, the labellum of which has ascending rather than incurved lateral lobes.
