Abstract
I am a traffic safety researcher based in Germany. In the last six years, I have conducted safety analyses and audits of pedestrian crossings in different European Countries for my ongoing dissertation and other research projects. This text is the essence of seeing several hundreds of crossings and defines nine principles for designing safe pedestrian crossings that enhance walkability. The principles can be used as a basis for local planners to improve pedestrian crossings.
