Abstract

This article discusses about Pencak Silat and its interaction during the Japanese occupation period 1942-1945 in Yogyakarta. When the Japanese arrived, they also bring their own culture, and martial arts get some attention in three and a half years of the Japanese occupation period. Acculturation is inevitable, and its impact for the pencak silat development in the future. With the support from Japan, and also from pencak silat figures in Yogyakarta, pencak silat can extend its influence to sports, military, and create an organization that form the basis for the establishment of IPSI.
