Abstract
The study aims are developed a systematic review of the literature on the influence of injuries and Functional Classification on the performance of Wheelchair Basketball players. The following keywords were used as descriptors: «Basketball», «Wheelchair», «Injury» and «Functional Classification». The keywords were always introduced in English, in the following computerized databases: Web of Science, PubMed, SportDiscus and Scopus, considering the search for documents carried out until March 2022. To limit the search, four inclusion criteria were established: i) Select any type of scientific document, ii) Describe at least one type of injury in BSR (minimum 50 words), iii) Be written in English, Spanish or Portuguese, and finally, iv) Be available in full text or only have the summary. The systematic review finally consisted of eight manuscripts related to injuries and the Functional Classification in Wheelchair Basketball, classified according to different variables: General Variables, Specific Variables of the documents, Variables related to the subject of study and Quality Variables of the documents, where the Type of Injury and the Functional Classification of the players were the most relevant sub variables for the study. In conclusion, injuries are a limiting factor in sports performance. So, it is important to increase trunk and upper extremity strengthening sessions in wheelchair basketball players to reduce the number and the negative impact of injuries, before, during and after it occurs, after suffering an injury, the probability of relapse is high, due to the weakness of the area, as well as the need for rehabilitation by professionals.
