Abstract
In contrast to other solid organ transplantation procedures, which are currently well established in clinical practice, small-bowel transplantation must be considered to be still in an experimental phase, as only the introduction in recent years of new and improved immunosuppressive therapies has rendered it possible to again address this therapeutic option. The authors review the experimental basis, the associated techniques, the indications and the results and controversies with this concrete therapeutic modality.
