Abstract

Experimental study of self-pulsing behaviors of Yb-doped double-clad fiber lasers is presented. The behavior can be explained by the saturation phenomenon of the unpumped doped fiber. Results from frequency beating of horizontal modes, the pulse curves show fast oscillations in multimode fiber laser. The self-modulation pulses are restrained in single-mode fiber lasers, and the pulse train is rather regular and smooth than that of multimode fiber lasers. When the doped fiber is sufficiently pumped, the laser obtained a quasi-CW output state. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
