Abstract
An experiment is reported which demonstrates that novice computer program mers show a better comprehension of moderately complex computer programs composed according to an indenting scheme in which a new line is taken for each compound statement, as compared to programs in which the compound statement starts at the end of the line containing the statement. There was no interaction between the indenting scheme and the specific programming language used (RATFOR vs. PASCAL).
