Abstract

The pursuit of an ideal railway system, characterized by stability, longevity, low maintenance, and enhanced performance metrics, has driven innovative approaches in railway infrastructure. Among these, the emergence of asphaltic rail tracks (ART) presents a promising departure from traditional ballasted or concrete trackbeds. While ART offer potential advantages including reduced maintenance, superior ride quality, and decreased noise levels, their widespread adoption faces critical knowledge gaps and challenges. This work identifies key areas necessitating further investigation, encompassing material performance and durability, structural optimization, rolling stock interaction, maintenance strategies, environmental sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory considerations. Addressing these gaps demands collaborative endeavors across multidisciplinary domains, engaging researchers, engineers, railway operators, material scientists, and policymakers. Sustained investment in research, field trials, and knowledge-sharing initiatives stands pivotal to propel the development and adoption of ART as a viable, sustainable alternative in modern railway infrastructure. In can be summarized that the adoption of ART can enhance energy efficiency, stability, and sustainability in railways. ART improves train dynamics by reducing noise, vibration, and maintenance costs while extending service life. By meeting safety and environmental standards, ART offers a cost-effective, reliable alternative to traditional tracks, promoting seamless integration with existing railway networks.
