Abstract

The thermal conductivity of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) is normally measured using laser flash method, which is a two-sided thermal imaging method. Because laser flash cannot be used for TBCs applied on real components, one-sided thermal imaging method is being developed for potential nondestructive inspection and monitoring of TBC conditions during service. One such method is a multilayer thermal modeling method developed at Argonne National Laboratory. In this study, these methods are reviewed and their capability for conductivity measurement for two-layer TBC material is analyzed based on theoretical analyses. In particular, it is identified that only one TBC property, the conductivity, can be determined by two-sided methods, while two TBC properties, conductivity and heat capacity, can be determined by one-sided method. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.
