Abstract

The traditional literature calls the National System of Innovation the set of institutions of the public or private sectors whose activities and interactions generate, adopt, import, modify and diffuse new technologies. To that end, the level of articulation of the three main actors that compose this system (state, company and university / research institute) are decisive for the generation of innovation. Fundamental in the production and diffusion of knowledge, universities hold a large part of this, and from them sometimes the process of technology transfer originates for companies. The results of research and development activities carried out within the scope of these institutions, resulting from the actions of researchers and teachers, generate the intellectual property assets (intangible assets). The present work aims to analyze the importance of intellectual property assets in universities, to contextualize the historical evolution of universities in Brazil, considering their role in technological innovation, and finally, to analyze the procedure of protection for deposit or registration of Intellectual Property assets (PI) from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC) in order to guide the decisions of managers in private universities in strategies to be adopted in the management of IP assets.
