Abstract
The paper discusses probabilistic methods of designing dykes, and suggests that it is better than the currently used deterministic method. The two methods are compared, although numerical comparisons are difficult because the deterministic method depends mainly upon engineering instinct. Illustrative comparisons show differences of a factor of 1000 in failure probability, with the same dimensions, following deterministic guidelines.
