Abstract
This study investigates the challenges and mitigation strategies associated with the Geographical Indication (GI) registration process for local products in Bangladesh. It examines legal, administrative, and economic barriers hindering effective GI recognition. By exploring the experiences of key stakeholders, the study aims to provide actionable recommendations to enhance GI registration efficiency, increase awareness among local producers, and strengthen institutional support for preserving cultural heritage while maximizing economic benefits. A qualitative case study approach was employed, utilizing semi-structured and unstructured interviews with 22 participants, including producers, legal experts, and government officials. Thematic and narrative analyses were conducted using MAXQDA software, supported by a group interview to validate emergent insights. An inductive thematic approach facilitated the identification of recurring patterns and nuanced stakeholder perspectives on the GI registration process in Bangladesh. The study uncovers critical challenges such as producers’ limited awareness, fragmented legal and institutional frameworks, bureaucratic inertia, and prohibitive registration costs. It also highlights the adverse effects of inadequate historical documentation and fragile enforcement mechanisms. Findings indicate that strategic awareness campaigns, targeted financial assistance, simplified legal procedures, and cross-border cooperation are pivotal to improving GI registration and realizing its economic potential. This research enriches the underexplored literature on GI registration in Bangladesh by delivering a comprehensive, stakeholder-informed understanding of systemic barriers and actionable pathways forward. The study’s findings provide valuable recommendations for improving GI governance, fostering international recognition, and leveraging GI as a tool for economic and cultural sustainability in emerging markets.
