Metastatic Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Epidemiology and Available Systemic Therapies

Abstract

Metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma rarely since surgery cures the majority of primary tumors. Metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma causes significant morbidity and mortality. Identifying characteristics of patients and the primary tumor may help to predict risk for metastasis and aid in the prevention, detection, or treatment of metastatic squamous cell cancer. Due to the rarity of metastatic cutaneous SCC, there are few prospective trials examining tumor characteristics associated with metastasis. Furthermore, the rarity and morbidity of metastatic squamous cell carcinoma make randomized controlled therapeutic trials difficult. We examine the risk factors and systemic treatments for metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
