Abstract

Identifies that MISs are used in the UK for administration but less so for management (the former dealing with practical day to day tasks the later with decision making - strategy etc). For MIS to be useful of management must provide easy access to relevant information so that managers can identify problems, formulte and explore the impacts of a range of solutions, evaluate changes they make. Some limited evidence presented that managers in UK schools do not use SIMS for management decision making (except for limited financial planning). Argues that one of the reasons for this is lack of management training and understanding of the role IT could play (as well as problems with the SIMS software).
