Abstract

New designs for dimpled micro-channels (circular and U-shaped) are numerically studied in the paper. Three rectangular configurations are investigated, these are plain micro-channel (MC) (no dimples), and micro-channel with circular dimples (MC-CD) and micro-channel with U-shaped dimples (MC-UD). The thermal and hydraulic performance of these configurations is evaluated by comparing temperature, velocity and pressure drop distributions. The results show that the temperature in heat sinks with both types of dimples MC-CD and MC-UD decreases by 18.2 K and 19.7 K respectively in comparison with plain micro-channel heat sink MC. This refers to an increase in the thermal performance of dimpled ones. On the other hand, pressure drop increases as a result of the use of dimpled channels.
